What is Private Equity?

Private equity (PE) is equity ownership or an interest in an entity that is not publicly listed or traded.

In India, PE funds assume the form of trusts that are registered and regulated by Securities and Exchange Board of India's 2012 Regulations regarding Alternative Investment Funds (AIF Regulations) AIFs can be set up only as a trust, company or a limited liability partnership.

Mode of Investments

Investors in PE may opt from one of the following instruments to effectuate their transactions:

  • Equity shares;
  • Compulsorily convertible preference shares (CCP); and
  • Compulsorily convertible debentures (CCDs).
